MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team completed a dominant weekend with its second straight 7-0 win, and its fifth this season, topping Mount St. Mary's on Sunday at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville. The Red Flash swept the doubles action and dropped only two sets in singles. Saint Francis improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the NEC this season, while The Mount is now 1-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play. SFU won its fourth straight match.
"This was a solid win for the guys today," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "It's always great to get a conference win, especially against a team like the Mount. They are well-coached and always compete hard."
Junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) matched up at No. 1 doubles against Mount St. Mary's Mateo DeSomocurio and Darren Mast. The SFU pair earned a 6-3 win to improve to 3-0 this Spring.
At No. 2, freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) competed against Mount's Jean Armstrong and Zachary Burau. The Red Flash duo picked up a 6-2 win and is now 4-2 in dual matches.
In the match at No. 3, seniors
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) took on MSM's Louis Tonon and Brandon Wortkotter. In a quick set, Avuski and Cerdan claimed a 6-1 victory to move to 7-0 this Spring.
"We came out strong in doubles and didn't give them a chance to get into any of the matches," said Castille. "The energy was great from the first point to the last."
Foo-Kune met Mount's DeSomocurio at the top singles spot. The SFU senior took the first set, 6-2. In the next set, Foo-Kune came out on top 6-4. He is now 9-4 this Spring.
Luna took on MSM's Mast at No. 2 singles. The Red Flash rookie dominated the first set, winning 6-0. He repeated that performance in the next set to complete the sweep. Luna improved to 11-2 this Spring.
At No. 3, Dell'eva competed against Mount St. Mary's Tonon. The SFU freshman claimed the first set, 6-1. He completed the straight-set victory with a 6-4 win in the second set. Dell'eva moved to 8-1 in dual matches.
Avuski faced Mount's Wortkotter at the No. 4 position. The Saint Francis senior won the first set, 6-1, but Wortkotter responded by winning a tough second set, 7-5. In the deciding set, Avuski came out on top, 11-9, to improve to 9-2 this Spring.
In the match at No. 5, Cerdan met MSM's Peter Landis. The Red Flash senior earned a 6-3 win in the first set. He completed the sweep by winning a tough second frame, 7-5. Cerdan is now 6-3 this Spring.
Suntar took on Mount St. Mary's Armstrong in the match at No. 6. Suntar won the first set, 6-4, but Armstrong answered with his own 6-4 set win. In the super-tiebreaker third set, Suntar won 10-5 to improve to 10-1 in dual matches.
"We carried the momentum from sweeping the doubles into singles and played really well at the top three positions," said Castille. "The bottom three had a little more trouble, but credit goes to Mount St. Mary's, who continued to fight. We'll make some adjustments this week and get ready for Sacred Heart on Friday."
The Red Flash travels to Sacred Heart next Friday, March 24, for another NEC contest. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers are 2-7 overall and 0-1 in NEC play.
