GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis Team extended its win streak to six as it knocked off Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, on Saturday at the Greensburg Racquet Club.  The Red Flash swept the doubles action and won five of six singles contests.  SFU improved its best start in program history to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the NEC.  FDU dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Red Flash celebrated Senior Day before the match, honoring Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ), Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) and Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres).  The group has helped SFU to 44 wins over the last four years, the most in any four-year span in program history.

"This was a solid performance from the guys," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "FDU is a very strong team and always competes extremely well."

"A big thank you to everyone that came out today to support us. They definitely created a great home-court atmosphere and the players fed off their energy!"

At the top doubles spot, junior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and freshman Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) matched up against the Knights' Adam Chan and Danilo Vukotic.  The Red Flash duo earned a 6-3 win to improve to 4-0 in dual matches.

Freshman Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) met FDU's Pedro Carvalho and Diogo Garnel at No. 2.  In a tough set, the Dell'eva and Suntar came out on top, 7-6, including 7-1 in the tiebreaker.  Dell'eva and Suntar are now 6-2 this Spring.

In the match at No. 3, seniors Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) competed against Miki Nobuzawa and Gonzalo Quintana.  The SFU pair claimed a 6-2 victory.  Avuski and Cerdan improved to 9-0 this season.

"We came out with a lot of energy in doubles and it was important to get that point," said Castille. "We knew FDU would come out even stronger for singles after losing the doubles point and credit to them as they did exactly that."

At the top singles spot, Foo-Kune took on FDU's Quintana.  The SFU junior dropped the first set, 6-4, but fought back to win a tough second set, 7-6, with a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker.  Foo-Kune dominated the third set, winning 6-1.  He is now 11-4 this Spring, playing all of his matches at No. 1.

Luna faced Fairleigh Dickinson's Carvalho at No. 2.  The Red Flash rookie claimed the first set, 6-4.  He completed the straight-set victory, winning 6-2 in the next set.  Luna improved to 12-2 this season.

Dell'eva met the Knights' Vukotic at No. 2.  After dropping the first set, 6-4, Dell'eva responded by winning the next set, 6-3.  In the deciding set, Dell'eva came out on top, 6-4.  He is now 9-2 in dual matches.

Suntar matched up against FDU's Garnel at No. 5.  The SFU sophomore took the first set, 6-4, but Garnel picked up a 6-4 win in the second set.  In the final set, a super-tiebreaker set, Suntar won 10-6.  Suntar moved to 12-1 this Spring.

At No. 6, Cerdan competed against Fairleigh Dickinson's Salomon Koster.  The Red Flash senior claimed the opening set, 6-1.  He repeated that performance in the second set to complete the sweep.  Cerdan is now 8-3 this season.

Avuski took on FDU's Chan at No. 4.  The SFU senior fell 7-5, 6-0 and is now 10-3 this Spring.

"In singles, we had some guys that were a little off tonight, but I am thrilled with the way we competed," said Castille. "It's important to know you can win a match when you might not have your best stuff that day. This will serve us well for the rest of the season, starting tomorrow against a strong Duquesne team."

The Red Flash takes on Duquesne on Sunday.  The match begins at 1 p.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club in Pittsburgh.
