BOX SCORE Las Vegas - Freshman
Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) made sure the Saint Francis men's soccer team's (4-3) trip to Las Vegas would be a memorable one with a goal in the first overtime period to lift the Red Flash over UNLV (1-5) 1-0 on Friday night.
Moore's ReactionÂ
"It was always going to be a challenging game against a good UNLV side, especially with all of the travel involved," said head coach
Antony Moore. "The lads stepped up after a slow start and found their rhythm. It was nice to find a way to score and overcome some of the challenges that we faced."
Turning PointÂ
The game was even through the first 70 minutes before the Red Flash began to assert its authority on the match. The increased offensive pressure paid dividends in the 85th minute when a UNLV defender was shown a red card for a tackle on top of the box.
Highlights
- Senior Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) and sophomore Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) recorded shots on goal in the first half but the Red Flash didn't generate much offense outside of those chances. Saint Francis picked up the tempo in the second half. Rosa had an opportunity to put SFU ahead in the 85th minute with a free kick from 25 yards out but his shot went high.
- The Red Flash shouted for penalty appeals in the 90th minute when Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin)Â was taken down in the box but it was ruled a clean challenge by the center referee.Â
- Rosa won the match in the 94th minute, whipping in a dangerous free kick into the box that went untouched and inside the far post.
