Saint Francis heads to Howard Wednesday night

Washington D.C. - The Saint Francis men's soccer team (5-3) heads to the national's capitol on Wednesday night riding a three-game win streak. The Red Flash plays Howard (1-8) at 7 p.m.

Scouting Howard

The Bison recorded its first win of the season last Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over VMI. Howard is much more dangerous than its 1-8 record would suggest as five of its losses haven't been decided until late in the contest. Howard is 0-3 against NEC opponents, losing 1-0 to St. Francis Brooklyn and 3-1 to CCSU and LIU Brooklyn. The Bison appear to be a bit challenged offensively, scoring four goals in nine games. However, the attack is starting to hit its stride, scoring all four of its goals in the last four games after being shutout in the first five games of the season. Victor Guirma leads the team with a goal and an assist.

Series History

Saint Francis is 10-1 in 11 contests with Howard, winning 2-0 last season behind goals from Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) and Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere).

Coming Through in the Clutch

Saint Francis won two overtime matches in Las Vegas last week to win the Johann Memorial Classic hosted by UNLV. The Red Flash entered the weekend just 1-4-5 in its last 10 overtime contests, the only win a 2-1 win at Cornell in 2016. Saint Francis had dropped a 1-0 decision in double overtime at Penn State earlier in the season but got revenge with overtime winners from Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) and Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) last week.

Cream of the Crop

The Red Flash appear to be one of the top programs in the Northeast Conference once again in 2017 as it is one of three teams to possess a winning record. Fairleigh Dickinson leads the conference with a 5-2-1 record, followed closely by the Red Flash at 5-3. Last year's champion, St. Francis Brooklyn, at 5-4. Saint Francis is 15-4-2 in conference play over the last three seasons and hasn't had a losing record in conference since 2009.
