Red Flash Tame the Tigers

BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md.- The Saint Francis field hockey team registered its second victory of the season defeating the Tigers of Towson 2-1 to improve to 2-2 on the nascent season.

Turning Point

Two minutes after Towson tied the game, Red Flash junior Brianna Govia (St. James, Trinidad/Holy Name) capitalized with a goal off a penalty corner situation. Govia's shot, assisted by junior Hannah Retherford (Benton, Pa./Benton), proved to be the winning score.

Highlights
  • The first half was scoreless as both goalkeepers proved to be stalwarts in their defense.
  • The Red Flash scored the first goal of the contest in the 36th minute right after intermission. Sophomore Taylor Nesmith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) drove in from the near side and neatly shot the ball past the goalie to break the ice.
  • Saint Francis sophomore Livvy Webb (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) was whistled for a green card at the 47th minute. Towson was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
  • In the 53th minute, Towson's Beira Ho caught a ricochet shot and deposited it to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The turning point of the game occurred just two minutes later as Brianna Govia (St. James, Trinidad/Holy Name) scored off a penalty corner.
  • The remainder of the game saw no shot opportunities by Towson as the Red Flash defense tightened.
  • The game ended on a Red Flash penalty corner, which proved unsuccessful.
Notes
  • The Red Flash recorded 17 shots. The Tigers had four.
  • Red Flash junior Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), alone, outshot Towson seven shots to four.
  • After two consecutive games without a penalty corner in the second half, the Red Flash collected five such opportunities on Sunday. One of those chances led to the game-winning goal.
  • Saint Francis amassed 11 penalty corners to Towson's singular try.
  • Red Flash goalkeeper Elizabeth Dyer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) played a full 70 minutes in the net while recording three saves.
