BOX SCORE Loretto, Pa. - In a game dominated in large chunks by the Saint Francis men's soccer team (6-4), it was Saint Bonaventure who found the only goal (4-4-2), escaping Loretto with a 1-0 victory.
Turning Point
The game remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when Saint Bonaventure's Kosi Nwafornso outbattled an SFU defender and ripped a shot inside the far post from eighteen yards.
Highlights
- Saint Francis had numerous first half scoring chances. Junior Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) had the first chance to go by the wayside, cutting onto his right foot and curling a shot just wide of goal.
- Red Flash leading scorer Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) nearly added to his goal total late in the first half after senior Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) split the Bonnies' backline with a through ball but he poked his shot just wide.
- Mastrangelo had another great chance moments later, receiving a pass from sophomore CJ Smolyn (Holland, PA/Germantown Academy) and firing a shot low and to the far post but it hit the post.
- Freshman Gabriel Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lausanne Collegiate School) fired a shot moments later that fizzed just wide of the far post.
- Saint Bonaventure played itself back into the match in the second half. A Bonnies' header was cleared off the line by senior defender Kaelon Fox (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier (Kentucky)) and a follow-up header was plucked out of the air by senior goalkeeper Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory).
- Junior Nicco Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) had a golden opportunity with 20 minutes to play but headed a free kick delivered by freshman Christian KIrchhoff over the bar.
- Nwafornso's goal occurred with 7:22 to play.
- Kiernan had the final opportunity to send the match to overtime when he was awarded a free kick on top of the box, but his effort was cleared by the wall with 34 seconds remaining.
