BOX SCORE State College, Pa. - In a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams come close to scoring the game-winner, the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-2-1) found the net with just 39 seconds remaining in double overtime to top Saint Francis (2-3) 1-0 on Friday night.
Moore's Reaction
"Losing in double overtime is never easy after putting in the work for that amount of time," said head coach
Antony Moore. "To have it end the way it did is painful. We will prepare for Sunday and I am confident that the lads will bounce back positively."
Highlights
- The Red Flash came close on a pair of first half headers. Junior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) had the first crack at goal but his header from a corner kick went high.Â
- Senior Nick Hanuscin (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace) was the next to direct a header towards goal from a Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) free kick, but he steered the attempt just wide of goal.Â
- Penn State nearly scored a goal right before the half when a well-struck volley beat senior goalkeeper Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) but senior defender Kaelon Fox (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier (Kentucky)) was there to cover, clearing the attempt off the line.Â
- Rojas, who was sharp all evening, made his best save of the night early in the second half on a shot that took a deflection 10 yards from goal. He maintained his focus and kicked out the shot to temporarily preserve the scoreless tie.Â
- Senior Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) nearly scoredwith 15 minutes to play in regulation. The Red Flash got around the right side and junior Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) found Kiernan in the box. He spun and fired a hard shot on goal that was tipped out for a corner kick.
- The Red Flash created the majority of the opportunities in the overtime period. It appeared to pay off when Rosa's free kick was dropped by the Penn State goalie but he recovered just in time to pounce on a loose ball on the goal line.Â
- The game-winning goal came with 39 seconds to play as the Nitanny Lions got around the left side and found an open forward who converted from the penalty spot area.
