LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis Women's Tennis team fell 7-0 at Navy on Saturday in its season opener.  The Red Flash earned a doubles win in the match. The Midshipmen improved to 1-1 this Spring.

At the top doubles position, sophomore Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and freshman Nastasia Tamarkin (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) matched up against Navy's Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya.  In a tight match, the Red Flash duo came out on top 7-6, including an 8-6 tiebreaker.  Gutierrez and Tamarkin improved to 6-3 this year.

Junior Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and sophomore Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) combined at No. 2 doubles against the Midshipmen's Miranda Deng and Catalina Rico.  In a tough set, Bode and Seigford dropped a 7-6 decision, falling 6-3 in the tiebreaker.

Navy won the match at No. 3 doubles by default due to no SFU player available.

"I thought we came out and played some really good doubles," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "We took our foot off the pedal a little and you just can't do that against a really good team like Navy. It was disappointing to lose the doubles point when I felt we should have won it. Credit to Navy, who kept fighting and battled back to win."

Gutierrez met Navy's Emily Louie-Meadors at the top singles position.  However, the Red Flash sophomore fell 6-4, 6-0 and is now 5-5 this year.

At No. 2 singles, Seigford took on the Midshipmen's Josie Rogers.  The SFU sophomore dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to move to 1-4 overall.

Bode faced Navy's Brooke Bogdanovich in the match at No. 3.  The Saint Francis junior fell 6-4, 6-0 and is now 4-3 this year.

Junior Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) competed against Navy's Amanda Cyr at No. 4.  Miller dropped a 6-2, 6-3 result.

At No 5, Tamarkin met the Midshipmen's Rico.  In the opening set, Tamarkin earned a 6-4 victory.  However, Rico took the next set, 6-2.  In the deciding set, Rico came out on top, 10-3.  Tamarkin moved to 1-6 overall.

Navy won the match at No. 6 singles by default due to no SFU player available.

"In singles, I felt we competed pretty well," said Castille. "There are some things we need to work on that I think will make a big difference. And we will definitely focus on this in practice. Navy was just too strong today. They have a very good, deep team and are well coached. We wish them luck this season."

The Red Flash continues its opening weekend on Sunday as it visits James Madison for a 2 p.m. match.
