MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Women's Tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision against Dayton on Sunday at The Club Sport and Health. The Red Flash won a doubles match and a singles match, but the Flyers won the doubles point and three singles matches. The Red Flash fell to 0-6 on the season, while Dayton improved to 4-4.
Sophomore
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and freshman
Nastasia Tamarkin (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) combined at the top doubles spot against Dayton's Marlys Bridgham and Mattea Kilstofte. The Red Flash pair dominated, winning 6-0 to move to 7-6 overall and 2-3 this Spring.
At No. 2, juniors
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) competed against the Flyers' Jackie and Jade Kawamoto. However, the SFU duo fell 6-3.
Dayton won the match at No. 3 doubles due to no SFU player available.
Gutierrez faced UD's Kilstofte in the match at No. 2 singles. The Red Flash sophomore won the opening set, 6-4. Kilstofte retired in the second set to give Gutierrez the victory. She earned her first win of the Spring.
Sophomore
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) took on Dayton's Bridgham at No. 1 singles. The SFU sophomore fell 7-6(5), 6-4.
Bode met UD's Jade Kawamoto at No. 3. The Red Flash junior dropped the first set, 6-2, but responded by winning the next set, 6-4. In the deciding set, Kawamoto came out on top, 6-4.
At No. 4, Miller competed against Dayton's Jackie Kawamoto. The SFU junior lost a tough opening set, 7-6, including an 8-6 tiebreaker. Miller was tied 1-1 in the second set, but it went unfinished once the match point was clinched.
Tamarkin battled the Flyers' Kelly Pleiman at No. 5. The Red Flash rookie was trailing, 5-3, in the first set when the match was stopped.
The Flyers won the match at No. 6 singles due to no SFU player available.
The Red Flash returns to The Club Sport and Health for two more home matches next weekend. Saint Francis hosts Bucknell on Friday at 4 p.m. and Detroit on Saturday at 5 p.m.
