MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision against Detroit Mercy on Saturday at The Club Sport and Health. The Red Flash won the doubles point and a singles match at No. 1. SFU fell to 1-7 this season, while Detroit improved to 5-2.
Â
In the match at No. 1 doubles, senior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and sophomore
Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) combined against Detroit's Jenya Sirous and Artem Vasheshnikov. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-1 win for its first victory this spring. That win clinched SFU's first doubles point of the season.
Â
At No. 2, sophomore
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) took on the Titans' Alvaro Arce and Nathan Ponton. The SFU pair also won 6-1 and is now 4-4 in dual matches.
Â
Juniors
Chad Allender (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and
Samuel Miller (Smithfield, R.I./Homeschool) paired up at No. 3 against UDM's Gvidas Motuzas and Adam Zychowicz. The SFU duo was trailing 5-1 when the match was stopped.
Â
"We came out very strong and with a lot of energy in doubles," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "It was great to get our first doubles point this year as we've been working hard in practice on that."
Â
Luna met Detroit's Vasheshnikov at No. 1 singles. The Red Flash sophomore claimed the first set, 6-3. He completed the straight-set victory with a 7-5 win in the second set. Luna improved to 5-3 this Spring.
Â
Foo-Kune took on the Titans' Ponton at No. 2, but fell 6-1, 7-6(3), while Pinos faced UDM's Luka Soskic at No. 3, but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision. Foo-Kune is now 4-3 this spring, while Pinos is 3-5 in dual matches.
Â
At No. 4, Miller matched up against Detroit's Sirous, but dropped a 6-1, 6-1 result. Garcia met UDM's Arce at No. 5, but fell 6-4, 6-2, while Allender took on the Titans' Motuzas at No. 6, but fell 6-3, 6-3.
Â
"In singles, we came out a little flat and they jumped all over us," said Castille. "We were able to come back at No. 1 and Franz had a good straight sets win. At No. 2, Dylan battled back in the second set and had chances but just couldn't convert. Detroit Mercy is a strong and deep team and I felt we needed to win two of the top three singles to give us the best chance today. Unfortunately, we didn't do that and their depth was too much to overcome today, credit to them for a good match. We'll look to rebound next weekend."
Â
The Red Flash finishes its six-match homestand next weekend. Saint Francis takes on Youngstown State on Friday, February 23 at 2 p.m. at The Club Sport and Health. The Red Flash meets Northern Kentucky on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center in Pittsburgh.
