MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team fell 7-0 against Youngstown State on Friday at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville.  The Red Flash, who played a tight doubles point and went to three sets on three singles courts, is now 1-8 this Spring, while the Penguins improved to 4-6.

At the top doubles spot, senior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and sophomore Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) competed against YSU's Joao Garretto and Danylo Veremeichuk, but dropped a 7-6(0) decision.

In the match at No. 2, sophomore Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) took on the Penguins' Matthew Kritzinger and Vasilis Vardakis.  In a tight set, Luna and Pinos fell 7-6(3).  The duo is now 7-6 this Spring.

At No. 3, junior Chad Allender (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and sophomore Samuel Miller (Smithfield, R.I./Homeschool) fell 6-1 against YSU's Yossi Dahan and Bassem El Mekawi.

"I was impressed with how we competed in doubles," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "Definitely our best doubles of the season so far and we were unlucky not to be rewarded with the point for that."

Luna met YSU's Garretto at the No. 1 singles spot.  The Red Flash sophomore dropped the first set, 6-3, but responded to win the next set, 6-3.  In the deciding set, Garretto came out on top, 6-1.  Luna is now 5-4 this Spring.

Foo-Kune took on the Penguins' Veremeichuk at No. 2.  The SFU senior claimed the first set, 7-5, but in a tough second set, fell 7-6(3).  In the final set, Foo-Kune fell 6-3.  He is now 4-4 in dual matches.

At No. 3, Pinos dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision against YSU's Vardakis, while Garcia fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 against YSU's El Mekawi.

In the match at No. 5, Miller battled the Penguins' Kritzinger.  After dropping the first set, 6-2, Miller bounced back to win the second set, 6-1.  In the super-tiebreaker set, Miller fell 10-8.  Allender dropped a 6-2, 6-3 result at No. 6 against YSU's Dahan.

"In singles, I think we were good at some spots and a little down at others," said Castille. "We spoke a little after the match and underlined how we need to make sure that all six courts are competing at the intensity that we want. This will be our goal going into Sunday."

The Red Flash concludes its six-match homestand on Sunday against Northern Kentucky.  The match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center in Pittsburgh.
