Lacrosse rallies past Hartford for 20-7 victory

West Hartford, CT – Senior Jessica Mazzur (Dallastown, Pa./York Catholic) scored four goals and added an assist to help lead the Saint Francis lacrosse team (1-2) to its first victory of the season, 20-7, over Hartford on Monday afternoon.

Turning Point

The Red Flash closed out the first half on a 4-0 scoring run led by Mazzur, who netted two of the four goals, to give the Red Flash a 9-4 lead at the half. In the second half, Saint Francis picked up where it left off as freshman Emileigh Scott (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) opened things up with her fifth goal of the season. After Debbie Phillips of Hartford answered with a goal, the Red Flash put together a 9-0 scoring run to put things out of reach for the Hawks.

Notes

  • Twelve different players scored goals for Saint Francis, in addition to three from Morgan Day (New Park, Pa./Kennard Dale).

  • Paige Brady (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner Archbishop Prendergast Catholic ), Amanda Heidt (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), and Victoria Hernandez (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) each scored two goals.

  • Livia Baker (Fallston, Md./Fallston High School), Lauren Ryan (Fallston, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), Sam Scott (New Providence, N.J./New Providence), Katie Page (Columbus, Ohio /Bishop Hartley), and Shea Moran (Windermere, Fla./West Orange) were also involved in the 20-point outburst as they each netted one goal apiece.

  • The 20-goal explosion was the highest scoring total for Saint Francis this season.

  • Ashley Stoessel (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) saved seven of the fourteen shots she faced in the contest.

By the Numbers

  • The Red Flash totaled 32 shots on goal to Hartford's 14 and total shots finished 44-21 in favor of Saint Francis.

  • Saint Francis won 19 draw controls to 9 for Hartford.

  • The Red Flash successfully cleared 14 of 18 attempts.
