BOGOTA, N.J. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team picked up its third straight NEC win with a 4-3 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. After FDU swept the doubles action, the Red Flash won singles matches at the top four positions. SFU improved to 5-9 overall and 3-0 in the NEC. FDU dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
At the top doubles spot, senior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and junior
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) took on the Knights' Andris Gudins and Niclas Pietsch. The Red Flash duo fell 6-4.
In the match at No. 2, sophomore
Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) and freshman
Charles Morkel (Cape Town, South Africa/Paul Roos Gymnasium) met FDU's Moric Budinszky and Adam Chan. The SFU pair dropped a 6-3 decision.
Sophomore
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) competed against Fairleigh Dickinson's Maciej Autuch and William Bourne at No. 3, but fell 6-4. Luna and Pinos are now 7-7 this Spring.
"This was another typical college tennis battle between us and FDU," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "I thought FDU came out and played some good, aggressive doubles on all three courts. We'll have to keep working on our doubles as we can see how important that point will be going forward."
Luna battled FDU's Pietsch at the top singles spot. The Red Flash sophomore claimed the first set, 6-2. He completed the straight-set victory with a 6-4 second set. Luna improved to 8-6 in dual matches.
Foo-Kune competed against the Knights' Gudins. The SFU senior took the opening set, 6-3. In a tight second set, Foo-Kune came out on top, 7-6, including a 7-5 tiebreaker. Foo-Kune moved to 8-5 this Spring.
At No. 3, Morkel met Fairleigh Dickinson's Autuch. In a tough first set, Morkel won 7-5. After dropping the second set, 6-2, Morkel responded by winning the third set, 6-4. The freshman is now 3-3 this Spring.
Pinos took on FDU's Budinszky at No. 4. The Red Flash rookie won the first set, 6-4. He completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in the next set. Pinos picked up his sixth win of the Spring.
Sophomore
Samuel Miller (Smithfield, R.I./Homeschool) matched up against Fairleigh Dickinson's Chan at No. 5. However, Miller fell 6-4, 6-2. In the match at No. 6, Suntar met FDU's Bourne, but dropped a 6-2, 7-6(3) decision.
"In singles, we showed some great fight on all courts," said Castille. "I was pleased with how we competed and it was great to get four out of six singles to give us the overall win. We will take some confidence from this win and look to build on this tomorrow against a strong Wagner team."
The Red Flash continues NEC play on Sunday with a 12 p.m. match at Wagner. The Seahawks are 6-6 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
