MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team battled for a tough 4-3 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday at The Club Sport and Health. The Red Flash dropped the doubles point, but won singles matches at the top four positions. Saint Francis improved to 7-11 overall, while St. Bonaventure dropped to 3-15 on the season.
Â
"This was a good win for us to pull out," said Head Coach
Rob Castille, "St. Bonaventure is always tough to beat, as they compete really well. We dug ourselves a hole by losing the doubles point. We really have to get some things right in doubles. We can't keep going into singles down 1-0 and expect to win."
Â
At No. 3 doubles, sophomore

Charles Morkel (Cape Town, South Africa/Paul Roos Gymnasium) paired up against SBU's Hector Martinez and Indra Patwardhan. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 win to move to 2-4 this Spring.
Â
Senior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and junior
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) combined at No. 1 against the Bonnies' Victor Blanco and Lukas Linden Malmberg. However, the SFU pair fell 6-4.Â
Â
In the match at No. 2, sophomore

Â
Luna met the Bonnies' Blanco at the top singles position. The SFU sophomore claimed the first set, 6-2. He completed the straight-set victory with a 6-2 second set. Luna is now 9-9 this Spring.
Â
Foo-Kune faced SBU's Martinez at No. 2. In a tight first set, Foo-Kune won 7-5, but fell 7-6 in the second set, including an 8-6 tiebreaker. In the deciding set, Foo-Kune came out on top, 6-1. Foo-Kune improved to 11-6 in dual matches.

Â
With the Red Flash leading 3-2 in the overall match, Pinos matched up against the Bonnies' Patwardhan at No. 4. The SFU freshman claimed the opening set, 6-4. However, he dropped the next 7-6, with a 7-3 tiebreaker. In the final set, Pinos came out on top, 6-4, to clinch the match point. Pinos is now 9-9 this Spring.
Â
In the match at No. 5, Garcia took on SBU's Malmberg. The SFU sophomore fell 6-1, 6-4.Â
Â
Suntar took on St. Bonaventure's John Rutkowski at No. 6. After falling 6-4 in the first set, Suntar bounced back for a 6-2 win in the second set. In the super-tiebreaker set, Suntar fell 10-4 to drop to 3-3 in dual matches.
"I was pleased with how we responded in our top three singles matches," said Castille. "I wanted all three matches so our 4-6 would only need to win one more for the match. Our top three came through. We still need to get more solid at the bottom of the lineup as we can't always depend on our 1-3 winning every time. It's something we'll look to be better at on Sunday."
Â
The Red Flash takes on Duquesne on Sunday in its final match before the NEC Tournament. SFU battles the Dukes at 1 p.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center in Pittsburgh.
