PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback against Duquesne on Sunday at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The Red Flash dropped the doubles point, but won matches at the top two singles positions. SFU fell to 7-12 this season, while Duquesne improved to 11-6.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) paired up against Duquesne's Dane Bendel and Adam Blasinsky. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-2 win to improve to 11-8 this Spring.
Senior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and junior
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) combined at No. 1 against the Dukes' Chris Corrao and Andrew Ong. The SFU pair fell 6-2.
In the match at No. 3, sophomore
Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) and freshman
Charles Morkel (Cape Town, South Africa/Paul Roos Gymnasium) met Duquesne's Tim Kane and Jared Isaacs. However, Garcia and Morkel dropped a 6-2 decision.
"I thought we showed some improvement on court two during doubles, but again struggled on the remaining courts," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "It has been the story of our doubles this season and we spoke a lot about all three teams showing up from the first point. This will be our focus going into doubles next weekend at the NEC's."
Luna took on the Dukes' Blasinsky at the top singles spot. The SFU sophomore fell 6-4 in the first set, but bounced back for a 6-4 win in the second set. In the deciding set, Luna came out on top, 7-5. He is now 10-9 this Spring.
At No. 2, Foo-Kune battled Duquesne's Corrao. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, Foo-Kune responded with a 7-5 win in the second set. In the final set, Foo-Kune won 6-2 to improve to 12-6 in dual matches.
Morkel matched up against the Dukes' Kane at No. 3. The Red Flash rookie fell 7-6, 6-2 to move to 5-6 this year.
Pinos met Duquesne's Isaacs at No. 4. However, the SFU freshman dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to fall to 9-10 this Spring.
At No. 5, Garcia faced the Dukes' Dominic Lea. After winning 6-1 in the first set, Garcia battled through a tight second set, but fell 7-6. In the super-tiebreaker set, Garcia fell 10-8.
Suntar took on the Dukes' Ong at No. 6, but suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback to drop to 3-4 in dual matches.
"We showed some great fight during singles and I thought the match could have ended up going either way had we gotten a couple points here and there," said Castille. "This was a quality Duquesne team and it is reassuring that we hung with them the whole way through. We will definitely take confidence from it and know that whoever we end up playing next weekend in the NEC Tournament, if we show up and compete, we have a good shot at it."
The Red Flash will compete at the NEC Tournament this week at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. The tournament begins on Friday.
