LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team is set to begin the NEC Tournament on Friday at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. The Red Flash, the No. 3 seed, faces No. 6 seed Sacred Heart on Friday at 9 a.m.
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach
Rob Castille, is 7-12 overall and 4-1 in NEC play. Saint Francis wrapped up the regular season last weekend with a 4-3 win over St. Bonaventure and a 5-2 setback against Duquesne. Saint Francis defeated Sacred Heart, 5-2, earlier this season.
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) was named NEC Player of the Week after going 2-0 at No. 1 singles, while
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) also went 2-0 at No. 2 singles.
Charles Morkel (Cape Town, South Africa/Paul Roos Gymnasium) and
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) both earned singles wins against St. Bonaventure.
In doubles, Luna and Pinos picked up a doubles win at No. 2 against Duquesne, while Morkel and
Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) won at No. 3 against St. Bonaventure.
Foo-Kune leads the team with a 12-6 singles mark this season, playing most of his matches at No. 2. Luna is 10-9 this Spring, playing most of his matches at No. 1. Pinos has nine wins, with five at No. 4 singles, while Morkel has five wins. Garcia and
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) have four and three wins, respectively.
Luna and Pinos are 11-8 in doubles, including an 8-7 record at No. 2. Garcia and Morkel have a 2-1 mark at No. 3.
Sacred Heart, coached by William Boe-Wiegaard, is 4-14 overall and 0-5 in the NEC. Last week, the Pioneers earned a 5-2 win over Lafayette, but fell 5-2 against Wagner and 7-0 at Bryant. Seiji Hosokowa is 11-6 at No. 1 singles. Chris Sause has seven wins and Derek Chapman owns six victories this Spring. Chapman and Hosokowa have four wins at No. 1 doubles.
