STERLING, Va. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team fell 6-1 at George Washington on Friday. After a tight doubles point went to the Colonials, GW won five of six singles matches. The Red Flash is now 5-11 overall.
Â
In the match at No. 3 doubles, sophomore
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) met the Colonials' Kaan Tuna and William Tutecky. The Red Flash duo earned a 7-6 win, with a 7-0 decision in the tiebreaker, to improve to 9-7 this Spring.
Â
At No. 1, senior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and junior
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) combined against George Washington's Jakub Behun and Chris Reynolds. In a tight set, the SFU pair fell 7-6, with a 7-3 result in the tiebreaker. That match decided the doubles point.
Â
Sophomore
Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) and freshman
Charles Morkel (Cape Town, South Africa/Paul Roos Gymnasium) paired up at No. 2 against GW's Chris Fletcher and Christos Hadjigeorgiou. However, the SFU duo dropped a 6-3 decision.
Â
"I thought we had some really good doubles today," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "I'm disappointed we didn't come away with the point as I think we deserved it by the way we competed and played. But we can definitely take a lot of positives from this match."
Â
Suntar faced GW's Amlan Sahoo at the No. 6 singles position. The SFU junior dominated the first set, 6-0. He completed the straight-set victory with a 6-3 second set. Suntar improved to 2-2 this season.
Â
At No. 1, Luna took on the Colonials' Tutecky. The SFU sophomore fell 6-4, 6-4 to drop to 8-8 this Spring. Foo-Kune met GW's Reynolds at No. 2, but dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to fall to 9-6 in dual matches.
Â
Morkel battled George Washington's Fletcher at No. 3. The Red Flash rookie suffered a 6-1, 6-3 setback. At No. 4, Pinos matched up against GW's Hadjigeorgiou, but fell 6-4, 6-1.
Â
In the match at No. 5, junior
Samuel Miller (Smithfield, R.I./Homeschool) took on the Colonials' Behun. The SFU junior dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Â
"In singles, I was pleased with how our top two guys competed," said Castille. "They both had really good matches against solid opponents. I was a little disspointed with how our 3-5 guys played. They were getting down on themselves a little more than they should and that affected how well they played. We preach all the time about not worrying about how you are playing, just compete and find a way to get the job done. We didn't do that today and it showed in the results. I'm confident they'll all be better tomorrow against NEC rival Mount St. Mary's."
Â
The Red Flash takes on Mount St. Mary's on Saturday in a 4:15 p.m. match in Waynesboro, Pa. The Mountaineers are 5-9 overall and 2-1 in NEC play.
