BOX SCORE Morgantown, W.V. - A spirited defensive effort from the Saint Francis women's soccer team (2-6-2) held West Virginia (4-2-3) off the scoreboard for the match's first 70 minutes but in the end the consistent pressure broke the Red Flash in a 2-0 defeat.
Turning Point
Saint Francis defenders flung themselves in the line of fire all day long to keep the Mountaineers from the game's first goal but the seal was broke in the 71st minute. Sh'Nia Gordon slipped in behind the SFU back four and beat redshirt junior goalkeeper
Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School)Â with a left-footed strike.
Jordan Brewster salted away the match in the 78th minute ripping a shot at an open goal. Junior
Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) tried to clear the ball off the line but the shot had too much pace and found the back of the net.
Notes
- Despite countless blocks from her defenders, Hernan was still forced into nine saves on 33 shot attempts.
- WVU earned nine corner kicks to zero for SFU.
- The Red Flash were held without a shot attempt for the second straight game.
- The Mountaineers were ranked in the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches' Poll at the start of the year after returning nine starters from a team that reached the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
