Loretto, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's soccer team (3-6-2, 1-0 NEC) looks to build off of the momentum from Saturday's conference opening overtime win this weekend with away matches at Sacred Heart on Friday, Sept. 28 and Bryant on Sunday, Sept. 30.
Scouting Sacred Heart
The Pioneers are 1-9 and 0-1 in conference play after losing its opener to Bryant 2-1. Sacred Heart's issue has been scoring goals at a consistent clip. The Pioneers have been shutout in seven of 10 matches and six of their nine goals came in a 1-0 win vs. Saint Peter's. Senior Melanie DaSilva leads the team with two goals and an assist and is followed by Lindsay Corallo and her two goals.
Series History
The Pioneers leads the all-time series 6-9-5 but Saint Francis got the best of the matchup last season winning 2-0 on goals from
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) and
Emilee Barnett (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley).
Scouting Bryant
The Bulldogs are one of two NEC teams with an above .500 record, sitting at 5-4 overall and 1-0 in conference after the victory over Sacred Heart. Senior Cayla D'Amico leads the team with three goals and two assists. Lexi Kraemer, Corinne Rey and Amanda Spitaleri have chipped in with two goals.
Series History
The Red Flash defeated Bryant 2-1 last season behind goals from Barnett and
Erica Carpenter (Abingdon, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Saint Francis owns a 7-2 all-time record vs. Bryant and has won three straight.
Breaking the Streak
Junior
Alyssa McGhee's (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) overtime heroics on Saturday were big for a variety of reasons. Not only did her goal get SFU off to a 1-0 start in conference play but it also snapped a goalless streak of 565 minutes and was SFU's first goal in six September games.
Taking it On the Road
Saint Francis will look for its first road victory of the season this weekend as the Flash are 0-5-1 in its first six tries. Saint Francis has been better in conference road contests winning four straight dating back to last season.
Steady Suydam
Don't overlook the play of sophomore
Aubrey Suydam (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township). The Lancaster, Pa. native has been as steady as anyone in the SFU lineup and her versatility has been on full display as she has played all four spots on the back line. Due to an injury, Suydam was forced to make her first start of the season the midfield on Saturday. She handled the position change with ease, logging 90 minutes and dictating the pace of play from her holding mid spot.
