Women's tennis opens spring season this weekend

Loretto, Pa. – Saint Francis women's tennis opens the spring campaign this weekend with matches at Towson, Navy and Morgan State.

After a successful fall season, the Red Flash are poised to begin the main portion of its schedule on Friday. SFU returns its top two singles players from last season in seniors Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur). Gutierrez played No. 1 singles for the majority of last season and was named NEC Second Team All-Conference in doubles with alum Steph Miller. Seigford played No. 2 singles last season, while competing at No. 1 doubles with Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) who graduated last spring.

Sophomore Romina Cutipa (Huancayo, Peru/San Juan Bosco) is the only other returning player for the Red Flash from the 2018-19 team. Cutipa had a stellar fall season, going 5-1 in singles and doubles play at the fall invitationals. She is expected to make a big impact for SFU this season.

A pair of sophomore transfers will be in the mix as well for the Red Flash. Anouk Ma-Ajong (Paramaribo, Suriname/Sagemont) and Camryn Rossa (Charleston, SC/Oceanside Collegiate) both came to Saint Francis in the fall after spending their freshman campaigns at Western Illinois. Freshman Kristen Lucas (Hollidaysburg, PA/Grier School) will miss the 2020 spring season due to injury.

SFU will get the season underway against Towson on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The match will take place at Coppermine Racquet & Fitness in Pikesville, Md. The Red Flash then play at Navy on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. Saint Francis wraps up the weekend at Morgan State on Sunday, Jan. 19.
