Annapolis, Md. – Saint Francis women's tennis opened the season with road defeats at Towson and Navy. The Red Flash fell to the Tigers 4-3 on Friday evening before dropping a 7-0 decision to the Midshipmen on Saturday morning.
SFU's season-opening effort was spearheaded by strong performances from seniors
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur). Gutierrez won her match at No. 1 singles over Towson's Alexa Martinez, 5-7, 6-4, 10-3. Seigford took No. 2 singles in a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 victory over Amelia Lawson.
Camryn Rossa (Charleston, SC/Oceanside Collegiate) won her debut match for the Red Flash at No. 5 singles in straight sets over Towson's Jessica Assenmacher, 6-3, 6-0.
Anouk Ma-Ajong (Paramaribo, Suriname/Sagemont) fell in No. 3 singles to Themis Haliou, 7-6, 6-4.
Romina Cutipa (Huancayo, Peru/San Juan Bosco) dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to the Tigers' Phoebe Collins at No. 4. Towson won at No. 6 by default.
In doubles, Gutierrez and Ma-Ajong fell at No. 1 to Collins and Haliou, 6-3. Martinez and Lawson were winning 5-3 at No. 2 doubles over Seigford and Cutipa when the overall match was decided. The Tigers secured No. 3 doubles by default.
