LORETTO, Pa. –
Keshawn McNeill (Camp Zama, Japan/Zama American Middle High School), a freshman on the Saint Francis University men' basketball team, will compete in the FIBA U18 Asian Championships as a member of Japan National Team starting on August 22 at the Azadi Basketball Hall in Tehran, Iran.
"This is a great accomplishment for Keshawn," said Saint Francis University head coach
Rob Krimmel. "He will have an opportunity to test his skills against some of the best players in the world."
The seven-day, 10-team event begins on August 21, but McNeill and Team Japan will make their 2022 debut against Lebanon on August 22. Japan will finish the Group Phase against host Iran on August 23.
The quarterfinals are on August 24 with the semifinals taking place on August 26 and the championship match is on August 28. All 10 teams will play five contests with the losers of the quarterfinals playing in Classification Games on August 26 and 28. Teams that fall in the semifinal matchup will square off in a third-place game on August 28.
"We are excited to follow him throughout the tournament and welcome him to Loretto when he is finished competing," said Krimmel.
McNeill was born and raised in Japan his whole life and will be joining the Red Flash as a walk-on at the conclusion of the event. He averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in his high school career at Zama American Middle High School. McNeill also led his team to the X1 Pac East Championship and was named the Pac East Most Valuable Player.
