OPENING STICK VS. BROWN
Friday's match between Saint Francis and Brown marks the second meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 2021 season. It will be the second-straight campaign head coach Maria Bettiana Cerretta will face her former team after she served as an assistant coach for the 2017 season before her arrival in Loretto.
THE WORD ON BROWN
The Bears will open their 2022 campaign against the Red Flash after a 6-11 overall season and 2-5 in Ivy League play. Brown returns two of its Top-5 scorers in Makayla Walsh and Imogen Govan. Walsh ranked second on the team with three goals and five assists for 11 points, while Govan was third on the team with two tallies and three assists for seven points. Jodie Brine registered 73 saves, a 1.93 goals against average and a .723 save percentage in between the pipes last season.
LAST TIME WE MET BROWN
Brown defeated Saint Francis 2-0 on September 3, 2021 in Providence. Ana Claire Piacentini and Cameron Kinsella both scored for the Bears.
Chloe South made seven saves for the Red Flash and Jodi Brine turned away five shots for Brown.
OPENING STICK VS. HOLY CROSS
Sunday's match between Saint Francis and Holy Cross marks the third meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 2007 season. The Crusaders have won both matchups in the series including the first tilt in New England in 2007. The game will be played on the campus of Providence University.
THE WORD ON HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders, who will play at Fairfield on Friday, comes into the weekend 1-1 after falling to Stanford 2-1 on August 26 and defeating California-Davis 3-2 on August 27. Sinead Walsh leads the team with a goal and an assist for three points, while Isabella Henderson, Allie McDonough and Gabby Venezia all have found the back of the cage this season. Brooke Ross has eight saves, a 1.85 goals against average and a .667 save percentage.
LAST TIME WE MET HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders defeated Saint Francis 3-0 in the 2021 season opener on August 27, 2021. Allie McDonough, Meggan Fourie and Sinead Walsh all found the cage for Holy Cross.
Chloe South had four saves for Saint Francis and Brooke Ross had two stops for the Crusaders.
LAST TIME OUT
Saint Francis lost to Miami (Ohio) on August 28 after falling 2-1 to Ball State in the season opener on August 26.
Eva Valentini scored in the game against Ball State, marking the second-straight year she had the first goal of the season for the Red Flash and her second tally against Ball State.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Red Flash will make its 2022 DeGol Field debut against Georgetown on Sunday, September 11. Saint Francis won a thrilling game against the Hoyas in overtime last season in the nation's capital.
RETURNING ALL-NEC PLAYERS
Saint Francis begins its second year back in the Northeast Conference and also returning are All-NEC second-team performers
Claudia Ortiz and
Eva Valentini. Valentini led the team with eight goals and six assists for 22 points while Ortiz ranked second with six tallies and four assists for 16 points.
NEW TO THE LO'
Freshmen
Chloe Butz and
Madison Waldspurger both joined the team for the 2022 season. Both players made their collegiate debuts in the starting lineup at Ball State on August 26. Assistant coach
Danielle Baumgardner also joined the staff and started in the spring of 2021.
ABOUT THE COACH
Head coach Maria Bettiana Cerretta begins her sixth season as the field hockey head coach at Saint Francis. Earlier this year, she became an American citizen.
