Saint Francis Men's Golf Sits Fourth After Two Rounds At NEC Championships

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Saint Francis shot six under par as a team on the front nine, but posted an 11-over par back nine to finish with an eight-over par round of 296 in the second round of the Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championships.
>> The Red Flash carded nine birdies and an eagle on the first nine holes of the day with just five bogeys before posting five birdies, 14 bogeys and four holes of double bogey or more.
>> Luke Minsky (Wexford, Pa.), who shot a one-over par round in the opening round, sits in fifth place going into the final round with a three-over par score of 147.
>> The graduate student was two under par in the first nine holes thanks to a birdie on No. 1, an eagle on No. 9 and six pars. He then registered a birdie on No. 15 and three pars on the final nine holes and has an eagle, four birdies and 23 pars through 36 holes.
>> Minsky is looking for his second-straight Top-10 finish after placing seventh at last year's championships. The graduate student is competing in his fourth NEC Championships and also finished 11th in 2019 and 21st in 2021.
>> The Red Flash, who were the runners up at last year's championships, are tied for fourth after 36 holes.

FLASH MOMENTS
Toby Webb (Easton, Md.) is in 15th place two rounds with a score of 151. The freshman was two-under par through the first nine holes with back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 with pars on the other seven holes before finishing his day with a birdie on No. 16 and four pars. Webb has four birdies and 22 pars through two rounds.
 
Nathan Godbout (St. George, Vt.) (22nd place, 153), Jackson Hoey (Sewickley, Pa.) (28th place, 158) and Avery Papalia (Marlton, N.J.) (36th place, 161) rounded out the Red Flash golfers.
 
Godbout notched the best round of the day with a one-over par round of 73 to move up eight spots. He registered birdies on No. 1, 2 and 10 along with 11pars on the day, while carding three birdies and 21 pars after 36 holes. Hoey recorded birdies on No. 3 and 8 on Monday with 12 pars to enter the final round with two birdies and 22 pars. Papalia posted birdies on No. 2, 9, 10, 12 and 16 and added eight pars in the second round to finish the first 36 holes with six birdies and 13 pars
 
Godbout is competing in his second championship after finishing 26th last season. Papalia is in his fourth NEC Championship event after placing 22nd in 2022, and 26th in 2018 and 2019. Webb and Hoey are competing in their first league championship.
 
LIU leads the three-round event with a two-round score of 589, three strokes ahead of Sacred Heart (592) while Howard (594), FDU (609), the Red Flash (609), Wagner (612, Merrimack (616), UMES (646) and North Carolina Central (659) rounded out the nine-team field. The Loretto team shot a 313 in the first round and bettered its second round by 17 strokes with a 296 for a two-round score of 609.

NEXT TIME ON THE GREEN
Saint Francis returns to action on Tuesday in the final round of the NEC Championships. The Red Flash will be paired with FDU and Wagner and will part of the second set of teams to hit the links. Papalia will tee off from the first tee at 8:20 a.m. and will be followed by Hoey (8:30 a.m.), Godbout (8:40 a.m.), Webb (8:50 a.m.) and Minsky (9 a.m.).
