SELECT GAME NOTES VS. MARYLANDÂ (FULLÂ GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Tuesday's game between Saint Francis and Maryland marks the third meeting in the all-time series that started 70 years ago in the 1955-56 season. The Terrapins have won both previous meetings, separated by 50 years.
• Head coach
Rob Krimmel will be facing Maryland for the second time in his career and the first time since the 2015-16 season. Terrapins head coach
Kevin Willard will be facing the Red Flash for the third time in his head coaching career after defeating the Frankies 76-66 (December 19, 2007) in Loretto and 78-61 (December 14, 2008) in New Rochelle as the head coach at Iona.
• Krimmel was an assistant coach the two times Willard faced the Red Flash with the Gaels, but the two men met on the hardwood one time as student-athletes. In Krimmel's freshman year at Saint Francis and Willard's senior year at Pittsburgh, the two future head coaches came off the bench for their respective programs on December 18, 1996, at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh. Krimmel had two points on a pair of free throws and two assists in 12 minutes, while Willard had eight points and three assists in 21 minutes of a Pittsburgh 79-42 win.
• Krimmel is 1-6 against the Big 10. The Red Flash defeated Rutgers 73-68 on December 20, 2014, for its only win against the Big 10. Along with the win against the Scarlett Knights, his team played Penn State, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio State.
• It will be the 29th time Krimmel will face a Power 5 team, with wins against Pittsburgh (80-70, November 25, 2020) and Rutgers (73-68, December 20, 2014) on his resume. This tilt is the fourth game versus a Power 5 opponent after falling at Clemson, Penn State, and Georgetown earlier this year.
• It is the first time the Red Flash has played four Power 5 teams in the same season. In 2022-23 (Butler, No. 25 Ohio State, No. 25 Miami) and 2018-19 (No. 20 UCLA, No. 7 North Carolina, No. 13 Virginia Tech), the Frankies played three Power 5 squads. The 2022-23 games were over a month, while the gauntlet of games in 2018-19 was in nine days.
• For the second time this season, Saint Francis will play four games in nine days or less. The Red Flash ended a five-game road trip to start the year at Clemson (November 8), Campbell (November 10), Penn State (November 12), and Mount St. Mary's (November 16). This time, the squad will travel to Niagara (December 14), Maryland (December 17), and Robert Morris (December 21) but will also have a short stop in Loretto for its annual game against Franciscan (December 19).
• It will be the sixth time under Krimmel the Red Flash will have four games in 10 days or less. It will be the second consecutive season the squad will turn the trick twice after the team started the 2023-24 season with four road games in a nine-game span and then had four games from November 20-29 last season, including the contest against Niagara. The loss to the Purple Eagles was the only loss during that four-game stretch. The team also had four games in 10 days in 2022-23 and 2014-15. Saint Francis hopes this time will be more like the 2014-15 season and the second span from last year when the Red Flash won three of four in that stretch.
• The interesting wrinkle in this portion of the schedule is that the Frankies had 10 days off before its tilt with Niagara and then will have 13 days off after it completes this four-game stretch over the Christmas/New Year break to get ready for Northeast Conference play on January 3 at home against CCSU.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Be the first win against the University of Maryland
• Be the team's third win against a Power 5 team under head coach Rob Krimmel and the first since defeating Pittsburgh 80-70 on November 25, 2020
• Be Krimmel's second win against a Big 10 school (Rutgers, 2014)
• Be the Red Flash's second road win of the year
• Be the team's first win in the DMV since defeating American 75-73 on December 2, 2023
ABOUT THE TERRAPINS
• Maryland comes into the contest 8-2 overall after falling to eighth-ranked Purdue on December 8.Â
• Derik Queen paced the Terrapins with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Ja'Kobi Gillespie (18 points), Rodney Rice (13 points), and Selton Miguel (13 points) also found double figures against the Boilermakers.
• Queen leads the team with 17.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Gillespie (14.1 ppg.), Rice (12.3 ppg.) and Julian Reese (12.2 ppg.) are also averaging double figures for Maryland.
LAST TIME WE MET
• Second-ranked Maryland defeated Saint Francis 96-55 on December 4, 2015.
• Ben Millaud-Miller posted 13 points, while Ronnie Drinnon tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Flash.
• Robert Carter paced the Terrapins with 20 points. Jake Layman and Diamond Stone added 16 points each.
• The No. 2 ranking marked the highest-ranked team head coach played at the time before playing at No. 1 Duke on December 5, 2017. Krimmel has played four Top-10 teams as a head coach.
LAST TIME OUT
• Niagara scored the final five points to defeat Saint Francis 69-66 on Saturday.
• Junior
Miles Webb registered his second consecutive double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
• Freshmen
Juan Cranford, Jr. (13 points), and
Jeremy Clayville (10 points) also posted double figures for the Red Flash.
TRENDING UP
• Junior
Miles Webb has recorded double-doubles in his last two games after not turning the trick in the first 43 games of his career. In addition, the two games marked the first time he had consecutive 10+ point games in his career. After posting 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds against Penn State Shenago on December 4, Webb tallied his first double-double against a Division I opponent by tying his season high in points (17) and adding 10 caroms. It is the first time a player had a double-double in consecutive games since
Eli Wilborn turned the trick against Sacred Heart (January 4, 2023) and Wagner (January 6, 2023).
• Webb, who made his first road start since last at Penn State on November 14, 2023, has started the last four games and is averaging 11.8 points and 7.8 points per game in that stretch.
• Freshman
Juan Cranford, Jr. has started the last six games and has posted double figures in his last four tilts. The freshman is averaging 10.2 points per game as a starter after averaging 5.4 points per game in the five games when he came off the bench. During his time as a starter, Cranford has dished out five assists or more twice. He has two 11-point games, a 13-point game, and a career-high 15 points against Radford on December 1. Cranford drained three from downtown for the first time in his career and is shooting 48.5 percent (17-for-35) in his last five games.
• Freshman
Jeremy Clayville had 10 points against Niagara to reach double figures for the fourth time this season and the first since he posted a career-high 21 points against Penn State Schuylkill on November 20. The freshman has at least nine points in seven of the 10 games he has played.
• For only the second time this season, sophomore
Bobby Rosenberger III was held to single digits with seven points at Niagara. The last time he was held to single digits, the sophomore posted back-to-back 20-point performances at Georgetown on November 23 and at home against Radford on December 1. Rosenberger was averaging 18.2 points per game in the four games leading up to Niagara. The sophomore also had his streak of at least five rebounds in seven consecutive games halted against the Purple Eagles. Rosenberger has hauled in at least five boards in eight of the 11 games.
• Junior
Riley Parker also had his string of consecutive games in double figures stopped at five games after finishing the game against Niagara with nine points. The junior averaged 16.6 points and 6.2 assists per game in his five-game streak. He registered at least 15 points in three of the five tilts with two 20-point games, including a career-best 23 points against Lehigh on November 26. He also had at least five assists in four games, including becoming the third player under head coach
Rob Krimmel to dish out 10 assists in a game and the first since Ramiir Dixon-Conover turned the trick against Bryant on January 21, 2021. The Red Flash were 3-2 during Parker's five consecutive 10+ point games.
• Saint Francis is looking for its first win in the DMV since defeating American 75-73 on December 2, 2023, while the team is looking for its first win in the state of Maryland since defeating Morgan State in Baltimore on November 13, 2019.
AGAINST THE OLD LINE STATE
• Saint Francis is 77-95 all-time against teams from the state of Maryland, but the Red Flash is 39-34 in regular season non-conference games against the Old Line State, including 17-30 on the road.
• Mount St. Mary's is the most-played team from the state of Maryland after playing the Mount 65 times from 1989 to 2022 as a member of the NEC in the regular season and three times in the postseason, Loyola was a member of the NEC from 1981-89 and played the Frankies 18 times in the regular season and one time in the postseason, Towson was a member of the league for one season in 1981-82 for a two-game set, and UMBC was in the circuit from 1998-03 with 13 meetings in the regular season and one meeting in the postseason.
• Saint Francis and the Mount played its second non-conference game since 1964 on November 16. The Mount is still the most frequent of the Maryland schools to play a non-conference game against the Loretto program, with 20 meetings in the regular season. UMBC is next on the list, with 16 non-conference meetings.
• Head coach Rob Krimmel is 12-20 against teams from Maryland as a head coach, 6-5 against teams from the state in regular season non-conference, and 2-4 in games below the Mason Dixon line.
BACK IN THE DMV
• Junior Miles Webb, an Arlington, Va., native, returns to the area for the second time this season and the third time in his career. He had six points against Georgetown on November 23 at Capital One Arena. The junior had 10 points in his first return trip to the area against American on December 2, 2023.
• The Red Flash is 18-35 against teams from the DMV in program history and 4-27 in games played in the DMV against those teams. Head coach Rob Krimmel is 5-10 against the DMV and 1-8 at the site of a DMV team. Krimmel does have a second win in the DMV thanks to a 78-72 win against William & Mary on December 22, 20219 in the DC Holiday Hoops Fest Showcase.
• Not to start a debate, but if you believe that Annapolis is part of the DMV then you can add junior Aidan Harris to the list of players playing his third game in his home area.
• In addition, Saint Francis is 3-2 against Navy, 1-1 in the place you can get the best Jamaican Iced Tea at City Dock Coffee, while Krimmel is 2-0 against the Midshipmen and 1-0 in Annapolis.
ON THIS DATE
• Saint Francis is 6-10 on this date, including 1-5 on the road.
• The only win on this date on the road was a 67-52 win at Duquesne in 2014 to end an 11-game losing streak to the Dukes.
• Earl Brown paced the Red Flash with 16 points, Ben Millaud-Meunier added 14 points, and Ronnie Drinnon narrowly missed a double-double after finishing with nine points and 15 rebounds.
FUN FACT: The last time the Frankies played on this date was at No. 25 Miami in 2022. Saint Francis had a chance to go into the locker room with the lead, but a steal and layup by the Hurricanes as time expired tied the game at 37 at the break. Saint Francis has been close to holding the lead or being tied at halftime twice this year at Penn State (November 12) and at Georgetown (November 23), but the game at Miami was the last time the team was not trailing at the break against a Power 5 team.
