Red Flash Soccer Downed 2-1 at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2008) – The Saint Francis women's soccer team overcame a rough start but pick up enough momentum to get the win as they fell to the Monmouth Hawks 2-1 in a Northeast Conference match up on Friday afternoon in West Long Branch.

The team will continue on to Maryland to face Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon in Emmitsburg.

The Hawks were the first on the board 20:30 into the game on a goal by Alessandra Detata.  Mary Wilks got the ball off a thrown in and sent it over to Detata, who shot it past Red Flash goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) into the lower corner of the net to make the score 1-0.

“We had a very rough start for the first 15 minutes, and couldn't find a groove,” said SFU head coach Brenda van Stralen.  “But we kept fighting, and ended up playing very well after the first 15-20 minutes.  Monmouth is one of the better teams in the conference.”

The Flash battled back in the second half, tying the game 1-1 on junior forward Rachael Seibert (Murrysville, Pa/Franklin Regional)'s (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) six tally of the season.  Seibert's shot from the top of the box beat Hawks goalkeeper Lia Fierra into the lower corner of the net less than 20 minutes into the second half.   Seibert now leads the team in goals, and is tied with senior captain Alanna Vespa (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary’s Catholic) (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary's Catholic) in points with 13.

“Seibert really did a great job bringing the ball up field,” said van Stralen.  “It was great possessive soccer.  Unfortunately, we put our heads down after that and Monmouth pushed and pushed.”

The Hawks came back at the Red Flash, scoring 3 minutes later to regain the lead at 2-1.  Detata passed to Joni DeMoor, who tallied her 10th goal of the season into the far side of the net.

Both Boyer and Fierra had 3 saves each.  The Red Flash out shot the Hawks 10-9.  Seibert led the Flash with 4 shots, 2 coming on goal.  Jennilee Morrisonn (Jeannette, Pa./Jeannette), Brittni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa/Karns City ) (Chicora, Pa./Karns City), Marina Accordo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton), and Chelsea Traurig (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) (McMurry, Pa./Peters Township) each had a shot on net as well.
