Red Flash tie Northeastern 0-0 in Double Overtime

BROOKLINE, Mass. (Aug. 31, 2008) – The Saint Francis women's soccer team tied the Northeastern Huskies 0-0 in 110 minutes of play on Sunday at Parsons Field in Brookline, Mass.

 

The Red Flash will return home to take on Duquesne at 1 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the DeGol Soccer Complex.

 

The Huskies out shot the Red Flash 8-1 in the first half, but were held scoreless by the solid play of goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Boyer had four saves in the first half, and nine total saves for the game.

 

“They were definitely the better team in the first half,” said head coach Brenda van Stralen. “We came out flat. But we were the better team in the second half.”

 

Senior defenseman Natalie Santoleri (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) and sophomore midfielder Haleigh Dunyon (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) led Saint Francis's offensive effort with two shots apiece. Freshman Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) didn't appear on the score sheet but had a also great offensive effort, playing in all 110 minutes of the game. Flick also played in every minute of Friday's contest Holy Cross.

 

“They had their chances, and we had our chances,” said van Stralen. “A win and a tie on a road trip? I'll take it.”

 

Rachel Seibert (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Brittany Valentine (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit/) (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) each had a shot on goal. The Red Flash had a total of nine shots in the game, with six on goal.

 

This is the second time in only three games the Red Flash have gone into double overtime. They tied Bucknell 1-1 in 110 minutes of play on Aug. 24 in their home opener.
