HAMDEN,
Conn. (
Nov. 1, 2009) – Despite
Brittni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa/Karns City )'s (
Chicora, Pa./Kairns City) team-leading five shots, the Saint Francis women's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net as they fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Hamden, ending their season.
The game was a highly offensive battle, as Quinnipiac had 29 shots and SFU had 18. With less than seven minutes remaining in the first half, Bobcat Lindsay Oliveri notched the game winner off of a feed from Krisiae Del Mistro.
The Red Flash had a chance to tie it up in the second half, but couldn't put it in. After a Bobcat foul outside the 18-yard box, Haleigh Dunyon (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) took a shot that bounced off of a Bobcat defender. Freshman Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow), who scored her first collegiate goal on Friday, took a shot that sailed high, leaving the Flash on the wrong end of the 1-0 score.
Red Flash goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) made 11 stops on the day.
Grenninger led the team with five shots, while Rachael Seibert (Murrysville, Pa/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) had three. Four other players were tied with two shots apiece.
SFU ends the season 8-8-2, and at 5-5 in the Northeast Conference. With a total of 15 points, they were one point behind Long Island, who claimed the fourth spot in the postseason tournament
