FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Sept. 18, 2009) – Sophomore Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount) picked a good time for his first goal of the season when he found the back of the net to lift the Saint Francis men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at IPFW on Friday night.
McLeod's goal helped secure a victory for freshman goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) (Herndon, Va. / Gonzaga College) in his first career action and start. Valcicak stopped five shots, including one in overtime.
The Red Flash improved to 2-4 with the win, and will look to complete a good weekend when it plays a 1 p.m. Sunday contest at Valparaiso.
The Red Flash put the first and last scores of the game on the board. In just the 11th minute of action, senior Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) (Christchurch, New Zealand / Shirley Boys) tallied his second goal of the season when he lobbed a deep shot from outside the box over the head of a charging Dons' goalkeeper, Donovan Dowling, for the first tally of the match and an early 1-0 lead.
Thirty minutes later in the half, Max Touloute answered the deficit. Touloute swiped an errant pass and, on-the-run, fired a shot that found the upper-90 near side.
The second half read like the scorebook. With the game shot totals at 17-15 in favor of the Red Flash, corner kicks at 3-3 and saves at 6-5 Red Flash, neither side could break through to break the tie. The horn sounded to end regulation, still knotted at 1-1.
But four minutes into the bonus period, McLeod's “golden goal” closed out the evening for the Dons with a 2-1 final on the board.
McLeod led SFU with four shots in the game, while Moir and junior Tyler Hibbs (St. Catherine, Canada/Governor Simcoe) (St. Catherine, Canada / Governor Simcoe) had three each.
IPFW dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
