Red Flash Downed by Wildcats 19-9

DAVIDSON, N.C. (March 7, 2010) – Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) (Delran, N.J./Delran) added three more goals to her team leading tally as the Saint Francis lacrosse team fell to the Davidson Wildcats 19-9 in Davidson, N.C., on Sunday afternoon.

Simmons currently leads the team with 11 goals and three assists for 14 points, and was tied for sixth in scoring in the Northeast Conference prior to today's game.

The Wildcats put up the first four goals of the game before Brittany Kovacs (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin CVI) put the Red Flash on the board seven minutes into the first half, down by a score of 4-1.  Keena Clausen netted one for Davidson before freshman Danielle Conwell (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) put in her second goal of the season three minutes later to cut the deficit down to two.

Jenna Mugele and Jen Crawford scored for Davidson, the latter's goal coming off of a free-position shot.  Katie Jenkins (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) (Rochester, N.Y./Out Lady of Mercy) struck back with an unassisted tally, but was countered by Haley Cook.  Davidson tallied three more before Simmons struck with her first of the day to make the score 11-4.

The Wildcats scored three more times before Simmons put in her second of the day with just 24 seconds to go in the first half, with Davidson taking a 14-5 lead at the half.

Crawford notched two goals in the first five minutes of the second half, with Simmons sending in her third of the day soon after.  Alanna Parker netted her first of the day, with Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) adding in her first for the Red Flash to put the score at 17-7 with just over nine minutes to go.

Jessica Palfrey scored the next two goals for Davidson.  Chelsea Kent (Winter Spring, Fla./Winter Spring) (Winter Springs) added in two more for the Red Flash with less than three minutes to go, but it was too late for SFU as they took the 19-9 loss.

Conwell and goalkeeper Danielle Pokusa (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) each had three ground balls, while Pokusa had a save in net.  Kimberly Peterson (Higganum, Conn./Mercy) made five stops.

Simmons had a team-high four draw controls.

SFU will host Niagara on Tuesday in a 2 p.m. game the will take place at Penn State.  The game is a make up of the team's season opener that was postponed in February.
