McLeod’s Last Minute Goal Lifts Red Flash on Senior Day

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 24, 2010) –Junior forward Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount) scored off a rebound with one minute remaining to lift the Saint Francis-PA men's soccer team to an emotional 2-1 Senior Day victory over visiting St. Francis-NY on Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.

Playing without their leading scorer, the Red Flash scored two unanswered goals to improve to 9-4-1 overall, and 5-1-1 in the Northeast Conference. SFU improved its record at the Stokes Soccer Complex to 5-0-1 on the season, and remained in a tie for first place with Sacred Heart, which defeated Central Connecticut State, 1-0, on Sunday.

The Red Flash will return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they visit No. 13 Monmouth at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The Hawks are in third place, two points behind Saint Francis and Sacred Heart, but have a game in hand on both teams.

Saint Francis University honored its six seniors before the game. Players competing in their finals season for the Red Flash include: Kyle Driscoll (Albuquerque, N.M/Saint Pius X) (Albuquerque, N.M. / Saint Pius X), Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield), Owen Gombami (Pumula North Bulawayo, Simbabwe/Mzilikazi) (Pumula North Bulawayo, Zimbabwe / Mzilikazi), Tyler Hibbs (St. Catherine, Canada/Governor Simcoe) (St. Catherine, Canada / Governor Simcoe), Benjamin Kujawa (Jarrettsville, Md./North Hartford) (Jarrettsville, Md. / North Harford), and Sean O'Reilly (Front Royal,Va./Seton) (Front Royal, Va. / Seton).

“I am proud of our team and happy for our seniors on Senior Day,” said Saint Francis-PA head coach Michael Casper. “We showed great heart and belief in bringing the game back from down a goal. It wasn't our prettiest game, but sometimes you have to grind out victories when you are not at your best. We have to get better defensively so we don't continue to put ourselves in difficult situations, but I am pleased with our attack and our resilience. We will take it, and look to get better as we have two more big games this weekend.”

Fleming, who entered the day with the Northeast Conference lead in points (24), sat out the game, but his teammates picked him up with a gutsy effort.

Junior David Butler (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) had two assists, while Kujawa had a goal and Hibbs added an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) (Herndon, Va. / Gonzaga College) stopped two shots for the win.

St. Francis-NY opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Jeverton DeLorenzi put a cross into the upper left corner to make it 1-0. Adam Maabdi received an assist on the play.

But Kujawa answered with his second goal of the season, tying a career high, at 37:15. Butler started the play with a pass out to Hibbs, who fed the ball to Kujawa for a shot that went right to left from eight yards out.

The teams fought back and forth throughout the second half with the Red Flash having the better chances.

With time winding down, Butler took a shot from that Terriers' goalkeeper Curtis Julien made a diving save on. However, he couldn't handle the rebound and McLeod had an easy putback to put Saint Francis-PA on top 2-1 with 1:00 left.

Both teams had 15 shots in the contest, while Saint Francis had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Red Flash were called for 11 fouls, and St. Francis-NY was called for seven.

Julien stopped four shots, and received help on defensive save, for the Terriers.
