Women's soccer blanks Quinnipiac to set up showdown with Monmouth

HAMDEN, Conn. (Oct. 9, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.  The Red Flash improved to 7-5-1 on the campaign, including a 3-0-1 mark in league competition.  The Bobcats fell to 3-6-1 overall and 2-2 against NEC opponents.

“Today we really showed the energy it takes to win a game,” said SFU head coach Brenda van Stralen.  “It was a strong all-around effort and that showed on the scoreboard.”

Thirty-five minutes into the first half, the Bobcats scored an own goal to put the Red Flash ahead, 1-0.

Saint Francis slipped one more score before the half to increase its advantage 2-0.   With two minutes to play in the opening period, Red Flash rookie Mackenzie Walter (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) controlled a deflection from a shot by Aryn Askin (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland).

Junior forward Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) notched her ninth goal of 2011, less than 10 minutes into the second half, to set the final score. Alecia McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Donegal ) dished to McKibben who was inside the 18-yard box and subsequently fired a ball over Quinnipiac senior goalie Jill Kelley's head and into the middle of the net.

Flash goalkeeper Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) made six stops on the day to record her fifth shutout of the season.

Saint Francis returns to action on Friday when it welcomes NEC-leading Monmouth (8-4; 4-0) for a 4 p.m. match.
