LORETTO, Pa. (April 15, 2011) –
Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) tallied a school-record-tying six goals and
Kara Ledgerwood (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) fired three goals but it wasn't enough to slow first place Monmouth, as the Hawks bested the Red Flash 16-9 at DeGol Field on Friday.
The setback dropped the Flash to 4-10 and 1-6 in the Northeast Conference while Monmouth improved to 10-4 and 5-1 against league competitors.
Despite a stat sheet that implied a virtual dead heat, Monmouth goalie Kirby Mundorf was the difference, racking up 19 saves to deliver the win. The Hawks attack did its part as well, thanks in no small part to six goals by Sam Lillo.
Saint Francis held an edge in ground balls (20-to-16) and draw controls (15-to-11), while shots were even at 33.
Monmouth landed the first blow in a torrid start to the game. Molly O'Brien scored on a free position shot 1:02 in the game but just over a minute later Saint Francis earned its first lead of the day with two quick goals on tallies by Ledgerwood and Conwell.
The Hawks scored three straight goals to open up a 4-2 edge. Conwell provided the SFU answer in the form of back-to-back scores to even things up at 4-4 with 18:14 to play in the half.
From there Monmouth went on a 8-to-1 tear that put the game out of reach for the home-standing Flash.
Saint Francis celebrates Senior Day on Sunday when it welcomes Mount St. Mary's for a noon match.
