Marshall sinks women's soccer with late tally

BOX SCORE

LORETTO, Pa. (August 21, 2011)
– Marshall's Angela DeSumma racked up five points as she piloted the Thundering Herd past the Saint Francis University women's soccer team, 3-2, at the Stokes Soccerplex on Sunday afternoon. The home-opening setback was the first for the Red Flash in Loretto since Oct. 23, 2009 – a span of 10 games.

SFU erased an early 1-0 deficit when Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) scored her first goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville), who assisted on Flick's tally, gave the Flash its first lead of the young season less than 17 minutes later. The 26th-minute goal closed out the first half scoring as Marshall entered the intermission looking up at a one-goal deficit.

The Red Flash managed to hold off the Herd through the first 30-plus minutes of the second half before DeSumma evened things up with a marker in the 78th minute.

With the game seemingly headed toward overtime, Marshall's Alyssa Cathey eluded defenders in the box before dishing to DeSumma, who fired the eventual game-winner with 30 seconds remaining.

The Herd out-shot the Flash 17-to-11 in the contest, including by an 8-to-4 margin in the second half. Saint Francis held a 4-to-0 edge in corners at the half but both teams finished with seven for the match.

McKibben and Ellie Gavin (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) each registered a team-high three shots. DeSumma led both teams with six shots, three of which were on goal.

Saint Francis continues its three-game homestand on Friday when it welcomes Canisius for a 4 p.m. contest.
