SFU splits contests at the Rebel Games

Holy Cross Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 6, 2012)
– The Saint Francis University softball team picked up another split during its Florida spring break outing, falling to Lehigh 8-3 before earning its first shutout of the season 6-0 to Holy Cross.

In the early morning game against Lehigh, freshman Chelsea Rex suffered the loss in the circle. The current Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week tossed two innings surrendering five hits and three earned runs. Davina Kachnovitz went 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored.

Things went much better for the Red Flash (3-4) in the second contest of Tuesday's doubleheader. The game remained scoreless for three innings before Saint Francis tacked a run on in the top of the fourth. Kaitlin Andler (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led off the fourth frame with an infield single and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With Andler on second, Rex brought her all the way around to score on a double to right field.

During their next at bat, the Red Flash broke the game wide open with three runs in the fifth. After Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) and Kachnovitz recorded back-to-back singles, they were moved over one base each on a sacrifice by Taylor Parsons. NEC Player of the Week Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) reached on a fielder's choice and collected an RBI with Garcia crossing home. SFU showed its speed on the base paths as Smith swiped second and Kachnovitz followed that up with  a steal of home to register Saint Francis' third run of the game. Andler then singled home Smith to put the Flash up by four.

The Red Flash would pad its lead further in the seventh adding two more runs to its six run total. Andler was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored. In all, SFU scattered 10 hits in the seven innings played. Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (2-1) picked up the win after throwing seven innings of four-hit shutout ball striking out five.

Saint Francis wraps up the Rebel Games tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Yale.
