Offense struggles in, 1-0, loss to San Diego State

BOX SCORE SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Aug. 22, 2012) – After 78 scoreless minutes, San Diego State's Haley Locker headed in the difference-maker on a set piece to lift the Aztecs to a, 1-0, win over Saint Francis U on Wednesday afternoon.  With the setback, the Red Flash fell to 1-1 on the season, while SDSU improved to 3-0.

The Saint Francis offense struggled to gain traction for much of the game, before finally opening up several scoring opportunities late in the game.  The Atecs held an 8-to-2 edge in shots on goal on the afternoon, while all four of SFU's total shots came in the second half.

The Red Flash defense responded well under near-constant pressure, led by a seven save outing by goalkeeper Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow).  The back line of Alecia McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Donegal ), Katy LaBella (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), Jennifer Brennan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Laura Stayrook (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) all logged complete games, looming large in the lengthy offensive stalemate.

“We did not play to our standards today,” said head coach Brenda van Stralen.  “We really only played the way we're capable of playing for the last 20 minutes which isn't enough against a good team like San Diego State – or any team for that matter.”

The Red Flash continues its West Coast swing on Friday when its pays a visit to Long Beach State.  That contest is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m. PT.
