BOX SCORE ONA, W.Va. (Aug. 31, 2012) – Marshall's Chelsey Maiden racked up a goal and an assist to guide the Thundering Herd past the Saint Francis U women's soccer team, 2-1, at Cabell-Midland High School on Friday.
Maiden produced the game-winner late in the second half by streaking down the right side and firing from 15 yards out. The 82nd-minute unassisted tally was her first of the season.
With the setback SFU (1-3) saw its early season road woes continue as it dropped its third consecutive game since opening the season with a home win over Duquesne. Marshall, meanwhile, evened its record at 2-2.
The Red Flash fired four of its six shots on goal in the second half, while the Herd took three of its seven in the period. Flash goalkeeper
Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) made five stops in the contest to match her counterpart Lindsey Kerns.
Junior
Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) paced Saint Francis with three shots, all of which required a save by Kerns.
Sophomore
Eloá Nascimento (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Jose Maria Matosinho) drew first blood in the contest, staking SFU to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of action. The set piece goal came on a free kick from 20 yards out. The Red Flash advantage lasted less than 90 seconds, however, as Marshall's Sarah Vinson finished from five yards out on a cross from Maiden.
The Thundering Herd held a 4-to-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first half, while the Flash offense was stymied by five opening-period offsides calls.
Saint Francis is back in action on Sunday when it visits Morehead State for a 1 p.m. match.
