Red Flash off to 2-0 start in NEC play

BOX SCORE STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2013) – The Saint Francis U women's soccer team wrapped up a perfect opening weekend of Northeast Conference play with a 2-1 win over Wagner on Saturday.

The Red Flash evened its record at 6-6-1 by winning its third straight game, while the Seahawks (8-3-1; 1-1) fell for only the third time this season.

Ellie Gavin (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) toed her second goal of the season in the 14th minute to give SFU an early 1-0 lead.  Gavin collected a perfect cross from Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) before firing a rocket past Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy.

The Red Flash extended its advantage to 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Mackenzie Walter (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) fed a high cross to Julia Gembry (Barnegat, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), who headed the ball into the back of the netting.

Wagner got on the board with nine minutes to play with a goal from Samantha Jensen.

Despite giving up her first goal of the season, Flash goalkeeper Abbey Collins (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) posted a solid four-save effort to improve to 3-0.

Saint Francis – which extended its NEC regular-season win streak to 13 games – out-shot the Seahawks 15-to-13 on the afternoon.

The Red Flash cracks the home portion of its NEC slate on Sunday when it welcomes Bryant for a noon contest.
