UMass Hands SFU First Loss of 2014

BOX SCORE AMHERST, Mass. (Oct. 5, 2014) - The Saint Francis University field hockey team, the nation's only remaining undefeated squad entering today's contest, fell to the University of Massachusetts, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash (8-1, 2-1) took the first lead in the contest when Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) scored after dribbling into the front circle and put one past the Minutewomen (5-7, 3-1) goalkeeper. The goal by Adamshick would be the lone tally in the opening period of play and SFU took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

UMass tied up the game 17 minutes into the second frame on a penalty corner attempt. The Minutewomen scored again 10 minutes later to take the 2-1 lead, its first of the contest.

The Red Flash responded quickly when Mackenzie Wirth (Thompsontown, Pa./Greenwood) deflected a shot past the UMass defense and the game was tied at two apiece with less than five minutes to play.

UMass went on to score its third goal off a penalty corner try at the 68:13 mark and took the 3-2 lead. Saint Francis had a late penalty corner attempt, but was not able to convert.

Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) posted seven saves in net for the Red Flash. Adamshick led the team in shots with three.

Saint Francis returns to DeGol Field on Friday to start another four-game home stand as it welcomes La Salle for a 3 p.m. match-up.
