Frankies snap 13-year skid vs. Bucknell, fall at Lehigh

FULL RESULTS

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2014)
– The Saint Francis U men's tennis team picked up its second straight win on Saturday by turning back Bucknell, 5-2, but dropped its final match of the weekend, 7-0, at Lehigh.

The Red Flash moved its record to 2-3 with the split.

"We played a great match against Bucknell," said SFU coach Rob Castille. "Having competed against them for several years, I know what a tough team they always are so this was a great result for our team. The guys played with a lot of passion and competed very well. Having not beaten Bucknell in 13 years, this is a great step in the right direction for this program."

The Frankies picked up the doubles point to get the ball rolling against the Bison, as the tandems of Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas)/Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) and Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra)/Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) took care of business at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions.

It was the middle of the Saint Francis lineup that got the job done in singles competition.

After Bucknell evened up the team score at 1-1, Flash No. 2 Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) sparked a string of four consecutive wins.

Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School), Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) and Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) picked up victories in the Nos. 2-5 spots to seal the team win, and then some.

On Sunday, SFU experienced some tougher sledding against a Patriot League foe.

"I think we had a bit of a letdown after a very emotional win the night before," Castille said of his squad's lopsided setback. "And against a team that is as good as Lehigh is, we just cannot come out flat like we did. This will definitely be a learning experience for this team. Whether it is a big win or a heartbreaking loss, we have to put the previous match behind us and be ready for the next opponent."
