OLEAN, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2014) –
The Red Flash men's tennis squad picked up their first win of the young 2014 season in a hard fought, 4-3, triumph over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.

Saint Francis (1-2) cruised through doubles, grabbing the lead and a much needed point. Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) and Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) Fernandez made quick work of the Bonnies' (0-1) Javier Ortiz and Eduardo Irizarry, 6-2. SFU won doubles after Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) and Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) mirrored Tico's and Gervais's performance winning their set, 6-2. SFU carried a, 1-0, lead going into singles.

"It's nice to get the first W of the year," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "The guys fought hard for this victory and definitely earned it. Having competed against St. Bonaventure all the years I coached in the A10, I know how hard Coach Bates' teams fight, so I knew going in my guys had to at least match their intensity. I was pleased to see us rise to the occasion and pull this one out."

Winning No. 2, 4, and 1 singles St. Bonaventure had a late, 3-1, advantage over the Flash, needing one point for the win. Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) led the Saint Francis charge as the fought back valiantly. The freshman fell, 2-6, but regained his focus and defeated Javier Ortiz, 6-2, 6-4, narrowing the Bonnie lead to, 3-2. Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) followed Cerdan's lead downing Trevor Haskell, 6-3, 6-0, tying the match, 3-3.

Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) clinched the match-winning point for Saint Francis, 6-3, 6-0, over Jacob Mishkin. The Flash handed the Bonnies their first loss of the season.
