FORT WAYNE, Ind. (March 30, 2015) – The Saint Francis U men's tennis team split its weekend series in Indiana as it fell to IPFW, 6-1, but bested Chicago State, 5-2.
"The team definitely competed better this weekend then they did last weekend. IPFW is a solid team and even though we lost, I was pleased with the effort my guys put forth," said SFU head coach
Rob Castille.
Against the Mastodons, SFU earned its lone point at No. 4 singles where
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) took down Martin Muadi, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (7). IPFW took all three points in doubles, including No. 3 doubles by default.
When the Red Flash met Chicago State they were primed for a big victory. SFU earned its keep in doubles play where they won all three points. The tandem of
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) and
Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) won 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. Avuski and
Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles followed by
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) and
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) winning 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
"Against Chicago State, I think the team got a huge lift from having Rodrigo back in the lineup. CSU is a solid team that battled hard. So I was happy to see my guys match their intensity," Castille continued.
Gervais, Cerdan, Barter, and Tico all picked up wins in singles play against the Cougars.
