BOX SCORE 2 LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis softball team overcame two six-run deficits in the second game to earn a sweep over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. The Red Flash earned an 8-0 mercy-rule win in the first game. In the second contest, SFU trailed 6-0 and 8-2, but fought its way back to take the lead in the sixth inning after a grand slam by
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) and a go-ahead homer by
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry). Saint Francis improved to 29-18 overall and 9-1 in the NEC.
The Red Flash honored seniors
Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) and
Aly Ramsaier (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) before the doubleheader. Blattenberger started in right field in the first game and Ramsaier got the nod at second base in game two. The duo has been a part of 109 wins at Saint Francis, the most in any four-year span in program history.
This was Saint Francis' fourth win of the season over Mount St. Mary's and the ninth straight win in the all-time series.
Cabell's grand slam was SFU's second of the week after
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) hit one against Bucknell.
The Red Flash hit 18 total home runs on the weekend, adding three in each game today after hitting 12 on Saturday. Including the Bucknell game, SFU hit 20 dingers over six games this week. SFU had 30 total homers in 50 games last season.
Cabell hit two home runs on the day, giving her nine on the season. With her next homer, Cabell will be the fourth Red Flash to reach double digits this season, joining Seneca (16),
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) (14) and
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) (10).
The Red Flash travels to Penn State on Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader against the Nittany Lions. The doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. SFU then heads to Robert Morris for an NEC doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at Noon.
First Game
Junior
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) pitched a complete game for the Red Flash. DeVries through five shutout innings to extend her streak to 18 innings without allowing an earned run. The Illinois native allowed only three hits and five walks, while striking out four. DeVries did not give up a hit through the first 3.2 innings and limited Mount to just three singles.
Sam Lichtner started for Mount St. Mary's and threw 4.2 innings, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits. Lichtner struck out five and walked five.
Sophomore
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) led the Red Flash offense with two hits, including a homer, and four RBI. Freshman
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) added two knocks, including a homer, as well as two RBI and two runs. Sophomore
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) also homered.
The Red Flash took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a home run by Cabell. The sophomore blasted a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right-center for her eighth of the season.
Saint Francis added four runs in the bottom of the third on two dingers. After
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) reached on an error,
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) sent a line drive over the fence in left.
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) followed with a walk. Seneca then blasted a 1-0 pitch to right for a two-run homer to give SFU a 5-0 lead.
The Red Flash plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out,
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) drew a walk and
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed with a single to center. After a groundout by Norton moved the McKee sisters to second and third, Seneca lined a ball to center to drive them in and extend the SFU lead to 7-0.
Saint Francis finished the mercy-rule win with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Witthus singled to center as pinch-runner
McKenzie Burge (Osceola Mills, Pa./Phillipsburg-Osceola) moved to third.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed with a sacrifice fly to right to plate Burge and secure the 8-0 victory.
Second Game
Junior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) started the game for the Red Flash. She allowed five runs, on five hits in 1.2 innings. Fellow junior
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) replaced Santai. Bower also went 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) entered the game with one out in the fourth and shut down the Mount's offense again. DeVries threw 3.2 shutout frames, now 21.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. She struck out four, to top 100 strikeouts on the season, and allowed only one hit.
Marian Ruf pitched the entire game for Mount St. Mary's. She gave up nine runs, four earned, on nine hits, with six strikeouts and four walks.
Red Flash sophomore
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) launched a game-tying grand slam in the sixth inning, one of two hits on the day. Freshman
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) followed Cabell with the go-ahead homer to cap a 3-for-3 day, including two RBI and two runs.
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) also hit a home run.
Marisa Mayes and Lindsay Heinze each had a homer and three RBI for the Mount.
Mount St. Mary's got on the board with a leadoff homer in the top of the first. Marisa Mayes' line drive to center deflected off
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois)'s glove and over the fence.
The Mount added five runs in the top of the second. A double by Mayes drove in Marian Ruf and Rachel Gavigan. A walk drawn by Lindsay Heinze with the bases loaded allowed Mayes to cross the plate. Holly Buckel followed with a two-run single to center, plating Rachel Heinze and Jessica Greenwald to extend the Mount lead to 6-0.
The Red Flash got two runs back in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff walk by
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois),
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run, opposite field blast. Norton's 14th homer of the year cut the Mount lead to 6-2.
Mount St. Mary's responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. Lindsay Heinze homered to left-center to also score Rachel Heinze and extend the MSM lead to 8-2.
Saint Francis added a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) started the inning with a single to center.
Melanie Martire (Herndon, Va./Herndon) pinch-hit and then reached after being hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third.
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson)' groundout to second allowed Troxell to cross the plate and cut the deficit to 8-3.
The Red Flash got a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) and Troxell traded one-out doubles to center to plate Cabell. SFU again chipped away at the Mount lead, trailing 8-4.
Saint Francis exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take its first lead of the game.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) reached on an infield single to start the inning. Two batters later, Norton reached on an error. A walk by
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) loaded the bases for Cabell. On a 1-2 pitch, Cabell launched a fly ball over the fence in center to tie the ballgame at 8-8. Troxell quickly untied the game with her own blast to center.
