LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team kicks off its 2017 spring schedule this weekend as it travels to Dayton, Ohio for matches against Northern Kentucky and Wright State. The Red Flash meets the Norse on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest and the Raiders on Sunday for a 3 p.m. match.
Saint Francis finished last season with a 14-9 record, a school-record tying mark for wins, and reached the NEC Championship match for the first time in program history. SFU went 3-0 in NEC matches and returns six players from last year's squad.
Senior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) tied for the team-lead this Fall with seven wins. Avuski was 7-2, including reaching the Bucknell Invitational draw final, while Luna went 7-3, including a 3-0 performance at the Rocket Invitational.
Senior
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School), freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) each won five matches in the Fall. Dell'eva went 5-1 and won his draw at the Bucknell Invitational, while Cerdan was 5-4 and Suntar was 5-2. Junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) picked up one win in the Fall.
Cerdan and Dell'eva won their doubles draw at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational after Cerdan and Luna went 3-0 at the Bucknell Invitational.
Northern Kentucky is 2-0 this season, with wins over La Salle (5-1) and St. Francis Brooklyn (4-2). Senior Lukas Clemens and freshman Andrew Niehaus are both 2-0 in dual matches. In doubles, Clemens and senior Mate Virag have combined to go 2-0.
Wright State is making its spring debut on Saturday at Michigan State before taking on the Red Flash on Sunday. Senior Jacob Perkins led the Raiders with three wins this Fall.
