LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team looks to continue it strong start to the spring with two matches this weekend. The Red Flash is off to a 2-0 start after wins over Northern Kentucky and Wright State last weekend. SFU visits Howard for a Noon match on Saturday and Navy for a 2:30 p.m. battle on Sunday.
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach
Rob Castille, earned a 5-2 win against Northern Kentucky last Saturday and a 6-1 victory over Wright State on Sunday.
Freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) is 9-3 in singles after two wins this weekend, while playing at No. 2. Senior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) also won two matches, both at No. 5, to improve to 9-2 on the year.
Freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) each have seven wins this year after going 2-0 in their matches last weekend. Dell'eva earned a pair of wins at No. 4, while Suntar played both of his victories at No. 6.
Junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) went 1-1 at the top singles spot, while senior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) split his matches at No. 3.
In doubles, each SFU pair was 1-1 on the weekend. Foo-Kune and Tico combined at No. 1, while Dell'eva and Suntar met the competition at No. 2. Luna and sophomore
Robin van der Heijden (Burgh Haamstede, Netherlands/Scheldmond College) lined up at No. 3 doubles.
Howard dropped a 7-0 decision in its season opener at Old Dominion last Sunday. The Bison play VCU and James Madison on Friday before taking on the Red Flash on Saturday. Saint Francis earned a 7-0 win over Howard last season.
Navy makes its season debut on Sunday, with a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis. The Midshipmen were 22-9 last season, reaching the Patriot League Championship. SFU claimed a 4-3 win in Annapolis last year.
