BOX SCORE Staten Island, N.Y. - The Saint Francis women's soccer team (7-7-1, 4-1 NEC) received goals from freshman
Mariana Jaleca (Sebtubal, Portugal/) and sophomore
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) in a 2-0 win at Wagner on Sunday afternoon.
Van Stralen's Reaction
"We controlled 90% of the match and scored two really good goals today," said head coach
Brenda van Stralen. "Our back line played really well and it was an overall solid team performance."
Turning Point
Saint Francis inserted four new players into the lineup for energy after Friday's double overtime loss at CCSU and it paid immediate dividends as Jaleca put SFU in front early with her first career goal.
Highlights
- Jaleca showed her class with a brilliant finish in the fifth minute. She received a pass facing the Wagner goal and curled her shot from the left side into the top corner to give SFU an early 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) made her finest save of the match in the 20th minute, springing off her line to beat a Wagner forward to the ball just before her touch to prevent a breakaway.
- McGhee's finish was equally impressive as Jaleca's. The sophomore forward sprinted on to a seam pass by junior Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and ripped a left-footed shot off the inside of the post in the 57th minute to put SFU in front 2-0.
- The Red Flash would shut the door the rest of the way as Hernan was barely tested.
Notes
- Saint Francis controlled the play to the tune of a 25-9 advantage in shots.
- Shots on goal were 13-4.
- Senior Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) recorded game-highs in shots with six and shots on goal with four.
- Freshman Dakota Graham (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) notched three shots and two shots on goal.
- The Red Flash collected just its second road win of the season.
- Three of SFU's four conference wins have come via shutouts.
- Saint Francis currently sits in a tie for first place with FDU with 12 points, but the Knights own a game in hand.
