BOX SCORE Richmond, Virginia- Your Saint Francis Red Flash field hockey fell to the Richmond Spiders 6-1 in A-10 conference play. The defeat caused the Red Flash to fall to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in A-10 play.
Turning Point
Saint Francis tied up the game 1-1 in the 39th minute. Richmond fired back with three goals in three minutes (41st-43rd). The scoring explosion sunk both the Red Flash's game hopes and A-10 tournament chances.
Highlights
·       The game was scoreless for 30 minutes as both teams were turned away by solid defenses.
·       In the 30th minute, Hannah Thomson received a penalty stroke opportunity. Thomson lined up and shot the ball past Elizabeth Dyer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) to break the deadlock.
·       The first half ended with a whimper as both teams prevented any shots or penalty corners.
·       In the 39th minute, Grace Gibson (Otane, New Zealand/Napier Girls') ventured into the middle of a scrum created by a Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) shot and knocked in her first goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
·       The stalemate was short lived as the Spiders woven a web of scoring that entangled the Red Flash. Less than two minutes later, Olivia Hubert scored a goal from the middle of another scrum.
·       In the 42nd minute, Florentine Beelaerts von Blokland dribbled through the defense and blasted a shot from just inside the top of the circle.
·       Kasey Gilbride concluded the three-minute triple crown scoring spree with a ripped shot from the left side with assistance from Beelaerts von Blokland to place the margin at 4-1.
·       At the 48th minute, Abby Lyons dribbled through the defense and placed a diving shot into the bottom left of the pen.
·       Emily Bowe finalized the scoring, in the 63rd minute, with a shot from off corner. Kasey Gilbride assisted on the goal.
Notes
·       Richmond out-shot Saint Francis 26-13.
·       The Spiders had nine penalty corners to the Red Flash's six.
·       Elizabeth Dyer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) played all 70 minutes in the cage and had seven saves.
·       Grace Gibson (Otane, New Zealand/Napier Girls') scored the first goal of her career. Congratulations to Gibson on the milestone.
