BOX SCORE Loretto, Pa. - The top two teams according to the NEC women's soccer standings met in Loretto on Sunday and 110 minutes weren't enough to separate them as Fairleigh Dickinson (6-8-3, 4-1-1 NEC) and Saint Francis (7-7-2, 4-1-1 NEC) battled to a 1-1 draw.
Van Stralen's Reaction
"We weren't good enough today," said head coach
Brenda van Stralen "We did some good things and created enough chances to win the match, but at the end of the day when you play the top teams in the league you have to bring your best effort and we didn't do that."
Turning Point
Saint Francis was awarded a penalty less than three minutes into the overtime period but senior
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac)'s shot was saved by FDU goalkeeper Amanda Fitzgerald.
Highlights
- The Knights converted on its first scoring opportunity of the match in the 14th minute. Viktorija Miseljic found Daria Jones in the box. The forward scuffed a shot toward goal onto the path of Sophia Albertsson who cleaned up the rebound.
- Sophomore Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) continued to produce for the Red Flash with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was credited with the assist, targeting McGhee with a diagonal ball. The shifty forward was able to get inside her defender and slot under Fitzgerald to tie the match at 1-1 in the 25th minute.
- The teams battled for the entirety of the second half and headed into overtime 1-1. That's when McGhee was taken down in the box but Morales couldn't give SFU the win.
- Albertsson had FDU's best chance of the match in the 98th minute but her shot from the top of the box went over the bar.
- Senor Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) nearly took matters into her own hands in the 100th minute, skinning two FDU defenders in the midfield before firing a shot inches high.
Notes
- The Red Flash outshot the Knights 17-12.
- Shots on goal were 7-7.
- Sophomore Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) made six saves.
- Bross and McGhee tied for the team lead with four shots each. Bross and Morales each finished with two shots on goal.
- The Red Flash celebrated seniors Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) before the match. The class has combined for six all-league selections, a Player of the Year, three All-Rookie selections, 90 points on 29 combined goals and 32 assists and a championship in 2016. Bross, a fifth-year senior, also won a championship as a freshman in 2013.
- The Red Flash and Knights remain tied atop the conference standings with 13 points. If the season were to end today, Fairleigh Dickinson would host as the tie breaker goes to records against the top teams in the league. FDU is 1-0 against third-place CCSU while SFU is 0-1.
