Men’s Tennis Earns 5-2 Win Over Division III No. 7 Carnegie Mellon

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Division III No. 7 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville.  The Red Flash won the doubles point and four singles matches.  SFU improved to 4-2 this season, while the Tartans dropped to 4-3 this Spring.

"This was a very good win against a very solid and well-coached Carnegie Mellon team," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "I challenged the guys to raise their intensity and energy today and come out ready to play in doubles, because CMU is always very strong there.  I was pleased to see they responded well and were rewarded with the doubles point."
 
At the top doubles spot, junior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) met CMU's Daniel Levine and Mark Prettyman.  The Red Flash duo earned a 6-1 win to improve to 4-2 this spring.
 
Freshman Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and sophomore Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) took on the Tartans' Jeffrey Chen and Kenny Zheng at No. 2.  In a tight battle, the SFU pair fell 7-6, including 7-5 in the tiebreaker. 
 
In the match at No. 3, seniors Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) combined against CMU's Nicholas Calzolano and Chaz Downing.  The SFU duo claimed a 6-1 victory to move to 2-0 this spring.

"We carried the momentum from doubles right into singles and came away with four of the six matches," said Castille. "We'll look to carry this momentum into tomorrow as we face our first conference opponent."
 
At the top singles spot, Foo-Kune faced CMU's Levine, ranked 30th in the ITA Division III Singles Poll.  The Red Flash senior took the first set, 6-4.  He then completed the straight-set victory with a 6-2 win in the second set.  Foo-Kune is 3-3 this spring, playing all of his matches at No. 1.
 
Avuski met the Tartans' Robert Levin at No. 4.  The SFU senior claimed the first set, 6-3.  In the next set, Avuski won 6-2 to complete the sweep.  He improved to 3-2 this spring.
 
Suntar competed at No. 5 against CMU's Kunal Wadwani.  The Saint Francis sophomore won the opening set, 6-2.  He earned a sweep with a 6-4 win in the second set to move to 5-0 in dual matches.
 
In the match at No. 6, Cerdan took on Carnegie Mellon's Calzolano.  The Red Flash senior claimed the first set, 6-1.  He won the second set, 6-4, for the straight-set victory.  Cerdan is now 2-1 this spring.
 
At No. 2, Luna met CMU's Downing.  The Red Flash rookie fell 6-3, 6-2 for his first loss this spring and is now 5-1 in dual matches.
 
Tico competed against the Tartans' Zheng at No. 3.  The SFU senior dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision and is now 2-4 this spring.
 
The Red Flash hosts St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday at The Club Sport and Health for its NEC opener.  The match begins at 9 a.m. against the Terriers, who are 3-5 this spring.

6. Cerdan(SFU) def. Calzolano(CMU), 6-1, 6-4.
