Men’s Tennis Wins NEC Opener, 7-0, Over St. Francis Brooklyn

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team dominated its NEC opener, winning 7-0 against St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday at The Club Sport and Health.  The Red Flash won every singles and doubles match, not dropping a single set.  SFU improved to 5-2 overall, while SFBK fell to 3-6.
 
"Today was a good way to start off our conference schedule," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "The guys came out focused and professional and got the job done. We'll rest up the next couple days with a few of our guys banged up and we'll get ready for next weekend."
 
At the top doubles spot, junior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) combined against St. Francis Brooklyn's Guillermo Artiz and Alejandro Ridruejo.  The SFU pair earned a 6-2 win to improve to 5-2 this spring.
 
Freshman Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and sophomore Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) matched up at No. 2 against the Terriers' Stefan Gmijovic and Zurab Tskhakaia.  The Red Flash duo picked up a 6-2 victory for its first win as a pair.
 
Seniors Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) competed at No. 3 against SFBK's Pablo Blasco-Torres and Javier Navarro.  Avuski and Cerdan matched the other two SFU pairs with their own 6-2 win to move to 3-0 in dual matches.
 
Foo-Kune battled the Terriers' Ridruejo at the top singles spot.  The SFU junior won the first set, 6-4.  In a tight second set, Foo-Kune came out on top, 7-6, with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker.  He is now 4-3 this spring.
 
At the No. 2 position, Luna met SFBK's Artiz.  The Red Flash rookie claimed the opening set, 6-3.  He then bettered that performance in the next set, winning 6-1, to earn the sweep.  He improved to 6-1 in dual matches.
 
In the match at No. 3, Tico faced St. Francis Brooklyn's Gmijovic.  The Saint Francis senior won his first set, 6-2.  He earned a straight-set victory with a 6-1 win in the next set.  Tico is now 3-4 this spring.
 
Avuski took on SFBK's Navarro at No. 4.  The SFU senior dominated the opening set, winning 6-1.  He completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in the second set.  Avuski improved to 4-2 this spring.
 
At No. 5, Suntar matched up against St. Francis Brooklyn's Blasco Torres.  The Red Flash sophomore won the first set, 6-2.  He then won the second set, 6-4, for the straight-set victory.  He is now 6-0 in dual matches.
 
Cerdan met the Terriers' Tskhakaia at No. 6.  The SFU senior claimed the first set, 6-1.  He then won the next set, 6-3, to improve to 3-1 this spring.
 
The Red Flash will host Lafayette next Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. match at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
